BUSINESS

How a Mumbai entrepreneur turned his passion for riding into a mission to build confident, responsible riders.

In May 2018, Rohan Mhatre made a bold decision to leave his regular job and pursue a dream: teaching people to ride motorcycles safely and confidently through Mumbai’s crowded streets.

Armed with just one motorcycle—a 2012 Yamaha FZ-S that he affectionately calls “Angel”—Rohan Mhatre launched MRK Motorcycle Training in Charkop, Kandivali West. Eight years later, what began as a one-man, one-bike venture has grown into an established local training business, with a fleet of six two-wheelers, its own website, and a dedicated online training management portal. His journey is a story of passion, patience, self-reliance, and the determination to build something meaningful from the ground up.

Starting With One Bike and a Clear Purpose

For Rohan Mhatre, motorcycle training was never just about riding fast. It was about helping people overcome fear and gain independence.

Many people purchase motorcycles but struggle to ride geared bikes confidently, particularly in Mumbai’s demanding traffic conditions. Learning clutch control, shifting gears, balancing, turning, and braking can be overwhelming for beginners.

Recognising this need, Rohan Mhatre built his training approach around practical, hands-on learning. His goal was to help students understand their motorcycles, develop control, and gradually build the confidence needed to become more capable city riders.

His first motorcycle, Angel, became the foundation of the business and remains an important part of MRK Motorcycle Training’s story.

Overcoming Challenges and Growing Through Patience

The journey was not without obstacles. Just two years after the business began, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted normal life and businesses across Mumbai. Training operations had to adapt to the restrictions and challenges of the period.

Despite these difficulties, the need for practical motorcycle-riding skills remained relevant. Many people owned bikes but lacked the confidence to ride geared motorcycles safely and independently.

Building a sustainable business also required time. According to Rohan Mhatre, it took nearly four years of consistent effort, customer trust, and word-of-mouth recommendations for MRK Motorcycle Training to establish a stable business identity and gain visibility on Google.

Rather than expanding aggressively or investing in a large fleet immediately, he chose a more gradual approach.

In 2022, he began following a plan to grow the business steadily by adding approximately one motorcycle each year. This allowed him to expand his training options while building the business at a manageable pace.

A Growing Fleet for Different Types of Riders

Today, MRK Motorcycle Training offers a variety of two-wheelers to suit different learning needs, including:

– Non-geared scooters: For learners starting with basic balance and scooter control.
– Geared motorcycles: For students who want to master clutch control, gear shifting, and everyday motorcycle riding.
– Cruiser and Bullet-style motorcycles: For learners interested in handling larger motorcycles and developing their riding skills further.

The expansion reflects Rohan Mhatre’s vision of making motorcycle training accessible to people with different experience levels and riding goals.

From Doctors to Filmmakers: Training People From All Walks of Life

Over the past eight years, MRK Motorcycle Training has welcomed students from a wide range of professional backgrounds. Its learners have included doctors, engineers, corporate professionals, college students, actors, directors, producers, and many others.

Some students begin as complete beginners, while others want to overcome their fear of traffic or learn to handle a geared motorcycle. Each learner brings a different challenge, making patience and practical instruction essential to the training process.

For Rohan Mhatre, the real achievement is seeing students progress from uncertainty to greater confidence and control.

His work reflects a simple belief: learning to ride is not merely about operating a vehicle; it is about developing the awareness, discipline, and skills required for responsible riding.

An Entrepreneur Who Built His Own Digital Platforms

Beyond running daily training operations, Rohan Mhatre has also taken responsibility for developing the business’s digital presence.

MRK Motorcycle Training now has its own official website and an online training management portal, both developed through his own efforts.

Official website: www.mrkmotorcycletraining.com

Training management portal: https://01k695jnaytvppbkdsek2m990x.hercules-dev.com/

Building these platforms himself reflects his willingness to learn new skills, explore technology, and find ways to organise and support the business’s growth.

His journey extends beyond motorcycles. It demonstrates the resourcefulness required of an entrepreneur who manages operations while continually working to improve the business.

Eight Years of Building a Business One Step at a Time

As MRK Motorcycle Training celebrates eight years since its launch in May 2018, Rohan Mhatre’s story offers a practical lesson for aspiring entrepreneurs: a business does not always need substantial funding, multiple vehicles, or rapid expansion to get started.

Sometimes, the right starting point is a useful skill, a clear purpose, a willingness to work hard, and the patience to build customer trust over time.

From his first Yamaha FZ-S, Angel, to a growing fleet and self-developed digital platforms, Rohan Mhatre has steadily transformed his passion for riding into a business dedicated to helping others become confident riders.

His journey is a reminder that success is not always about how quickly you grow, but how consistently you keep moving forward.
